Police: Man broke into Portsmouth home, stole TV sets

Posted

PORTSMOUTH — A 26-year-old Providence resident was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with breaking into a Bayside Avenue home and stealing two television sets earlier this month.

According to Detective Lt. Michael C. Arnold, at about 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 12, police responded to a Bayside Avenue home for a report of a breaking and entering. The homeowners told police two televisions had been stolen from inside the residence while they were away, Lt. Arnold said.

Prior to that, a Fairview Lane resident reported that a man had attempted to open an outside window at their home, he said. The man ran off after being confronted by the homeowner, and a search of the area was unsuccessful in locating him, police said.

Detectives tracked down the stolen property to a Providence-area pawn shop, at which the televisions were sold. Police identified the suspect as Elliot M. Britto, 26, of 43 Richter St., Apt. 3, Lt. Arnold said. Mr. Britto also fit the description of the man who ran off from the Fairview Lane incident, he said.

An affidavit arrest warrant was issued for Mr. Britto and he was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshalls Fugitive Task Force and turned over to Portsmouth Police Wednesday morning.

Mr. Britto was charged with breaking and entering a home without the owner’s consent, and was scheduled to be arraigned in 2nd District Court later today.
