Part of Metacom Avenue in Bristol was closed Monday afternoon after an accident brought down traffic lights near the Bristol Police station.
A car ran into a pole just south of Bay View Avenue, causing a chain reaction that brought down the lights at Metacom and Bay View avenues. Electric crews were working to restore the damage, but a traffic light still attached to wires was sitting in the middle of the intersection as of 6:45 p.m. A pile of broken traffic lights rested nearby.
Police and fire crews closed Metacom Avenue down between Annawamscutt Drive and Franklin Street just before 6 p.m. Traffic was backed up in both directions on Metacom Avenue, and usually quiet residential streets nearby were teaming with cars as officers redirected traffic away from the accident site.
There is no word yet on the cause of the accident, nor when Metacom Avenue will be reopened. Check back with eastbayri.com for more information as it becomes available.
