Letter: Why I’m voting Gleicher for school committee

A few years ago, I wrote a letter to the editor attesting to Mark A. Gleicher’s character. Today, I am writing again — not only to reaffirm those sentiments, but to highlight the many ways Mark has continued to demonstrate his integrity, leadership, and commitment to Little Compton.

Mark doesn’t simply talk about making our community better; he puts in the work to make it happen. His leadership and steadfast advocacy helped bring a Safety Point to Veterans Field, creating a safer environment for children and families. He also championed the installation of a safer, accessible swing at the playground, ensuring more children can enjoy a space that belongs to everyone. These accomplishments reflect Mark’s ability to identify needs, build support, and see important projects through.

His contributions extend well beyond school grounds. Mark has curated art exhibitions at Earl’s and the library, showcasing local artists and enriching our town’s cultural life. Through LC Makers, he created a sold-out summer art camp that gives children meaningful opportunities to explore their creativity. His initiative, Basketball Under the Lights, provided children of all ages with several summers of opportunities to learn, play, and connect through basketball after dark.

Mark has volunteered at the WMS book fair, served as a guest reader in classrooms, and participated in numerous town cleanup efforts. He understands that a strong community is built through both meaningful initiatives and everyday acts of service.

Mark was also part of the team that negotiated an equitable, forward-looking teachers’ contract, demonstrating his commitment to fairness and collaboration. This year, WMS was ranked #1 in Rhode Island by U.S. News & World Report, a remarkable achievement for our school community. His dedication to education and his ability to work toward lasting results are invaluable assets to our schools.

On a personal note, Mark supported me when I was priced out of my residence, helping me find affordable housing in Little Compton. That kindness speaks volumes about his character. He is a dedicated husband and father who fights every day for equal rights, fairness, and justice for his students and community.

Mark leads with compassion, acts with purpose, and stands firm in his convictions. Little Compton needs leaders who listen, collaborate, and work tirelessly on behalf of all our children and families.

I wholeheartedly endorse Mark A. Gleicher for Little Compton School Committee.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
