Letter: Thanks for the work to our public spaces

To the editor:

When I was a kid growing up in central East Providence in the 50s and 60s, my friends and I spent many cold winter days skating on Jones Pond, behind Pierce Field. In those days, many people found Jones Pond to be a mecca for winter activity and enjoyment.

For maybe 50 years or so, this pond lay desolate and in horrible disarray. I happened to drive by the pond recently, and today, it has been resurrected into Townie Pride Memorial Park, a nice addition to the Pierce Field area.

In all of Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts, I am not aware of any recreational complex that is as impressive as the Pierce Field sports grounds.

Congratulations to Mayor DaSilva and city officials for having the vision!

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
