Letter: Thanks for making this summer an exceptional one

To the editor:

As the sun begins to set on Summer 2026, I wanted to take the time to thank everyone who contributed to making this summer an exceptional one.

Our incredible team of student volunteers at Tap-In and McCoy Community Farm dedicated hours of service to ensure our East Bay neighbors had access to nutritious food. A huge thank you to the following students: Annie B., Colby N., Penelope L., Peyton H., Brandon L., Calliope G., Khaterina T., Molly K, Giorgio A., Mariah B., and Ian D., who represented Barrington High School, East Providence High School, Salve Regina University and Wheaton College.

I am excited to share that due to the generosity of our community over the past year, we were able to install a new commercial grade refrigerator and freezer to increase the nutritious choices available in our pantry. Our new produce stands look like a farmer’s market for our clients thanks to the Barrington Farm School, McCoy Community Farm, the

BMS garden and many individual growers.

Thank you to everyone who took time this summer to touch a person in need (Tap-In). Looking forward to the changing leaves, apple crisps, and to continuing to feel the warmth of this community as we turn the page of our calendar to fall.

If you find yourself wanting to become involved, please reach out! Current volunteer openings can be found on our Food Pantry, Grants, Community Outreach and Communications Committees. Please see our website for more information https://www.tapinri.org/

With gratitude,

Kristen Shields

Tap-In President

Tap-In is an all-volunteer organization and we are always happy to offer a tour or more information to anyone looking to get involved.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
