Letter: Don’t give away your shot at collaborative leadership

To the editor:

Have you ever felt utterly ignored, despite speaking up? I have, and it is exasperating!

Good democratic governance starts with open dialogue, active listening, and, at minimum, acknowledging community concerns. Many Barrington residents are all too familiar with the disenfranchised feeling of sitting through (and waiting to speak at) long public meetings or sending emails regarding major community decisions without receiving even a basic response. Lacking dialogue, decisions are often made in an echo chamber that misses out on the collective wisdom of our community's varied experiences. We have seen this disconnect play out further with the Financial Town Referendum, as the town council advanced ballot initiatives that work to reduce voter input. (Please vote NO on all four questions.)

Barrington has the opportunity to elect Neile Hartman to the Barrington Town Council. Neile brings a treasure trove of assets to public service. While her resume and work ethic are impressive, her most compelling characteristics are her humility to learn, her willingness to ask tough questions, and her sincere interest in hearing varying opinions. It is rare, especially in today’s political landscape, to find a candidate who so deeply embodies this level of commitment to collaborative leadership. As a Democrat, I am eager to support her Barrington-driven candidacy.

Vote for Neile. When you have an issue to raise, she will listen, engage, and truly value your input!

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
