Knife, pipe fight yields felony charge

A Providence man is facing felony charges in Bristol after allegedly throwing a knife at a family member during a fight that also involved a metal pipe.

Adam A. Jacobson, 35, of 20 Bellevue Ave., Providence, turned himself in at Bristol Police headquarters June 11 on a charge of felony domestic assault after the fight with his nephew at a home on Ryan Avenue. He brought two knives with him to headquarters, one of which was reportedly thrown at the victim.

The fight started as an argument with Mr. Jaconson’s nephew, which quickly escalated when the nephew pulled a knife on Mr. Jacobson and “waved it at him several times,” according to police reports. Mr. Jacobson told police he was quickly able to disarm his nephew, who ran off behind a garage on the property. The younger man reportedly returned with a metal pipe, about four to five feet long, which he swung at Mr. Jacobson several times, once nearly hitting him in the head, the defendant told police.

Responding to the attack, Mr. Jacobson said he pulled a knife from his pocket and threw it at his nephew, who was struck in the hip and cut. The defendant told police the knife was closed when he threw it but “it partially opened in flight,” reports indicate.

The nephew reportedly ran off yelling and holding his hip. The extent of his injuries is unknown.

Mr. Jacobson, who was released on bail pending a court hearing Aug. 18, is no stranger to the law, according to his record with Court Connect. He was charged in Providence in December 2014 with felony domestic assault and violating a no contact order. In August 24, he pleaded no contest to domestic simple assault, receiving a 60-day sentence, a year of probation and domestic abuse counseling.
