EAST PROVIDENCE —Bristol resident and Portsmouth High School track coach Shaun Horgan bested the field Sunday morning, Oct. 21, to win the East Providence Firefighters Freaky 5k Road Race held on and around the streets of the department's Station No. 3 in Rumford.

Horgan clocked a winning time of 16 minutes, 50 seconds over the USTAF-sanctioned course and on what was a near-perfect weather day for the race with sunny skies, little wind and temperatures in the upper 50s/low 60s. City resident Carrie Birth was the first female to finish, winning her division with a time of 19:35 while placing 12th overall.

All proceeds from the Freaky 5k are used by the E.P. Firefighters charity arm, which supports initiatives throughout the city.

Middle School runners compete

One of the many nice stories to emanate from the Freaky 5k was the participation of a middle school "club" team comprised of city students who lost the ability to compete this fall due to budget cuts in sports programs.

Cross country coaches and city teachers Brian Petsch and Tammy David have kept the middle school team together operating as a "running club."  Both are volunteering their own time, and the kids are participating simply for the love of running. About a third of the club members ran at the Freaky 5K.

With its relation to Halloween, costumes are always big part of the event. The middle school group ran dressed as "101 Dalmatians." Mr. Petsch was dressed as the "dog catcher" while Ms. David was dressed as "Cruella DeVille." The students, of course, were the "dalmatians."

The students and coaches won the yearly "Best Costume Award" for their outfits.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
