A 16-year-old is being held on felony charges after the UTV (Utility Task Vehicle) he was operating flipped Sunday afternoon, killing a five-year-old girl and seriously injuring another in Little Compton.
Police were called to 530 Long Highway at 1:55 p.m. via 911 for a report of a rollover accident with injuries. Callers said one of the injured children was unresponsive.
Police and fire crews respond and assessed eight juveniles who had been on the vehicle, a John Deere Gator.
Rescue crews transported one five-year-old girl with critical injuries to St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, and Tiverton rescue crews brought another girl, 5, to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence with serious injuries. The remaining juveniles were assessed for injuries and medically released to their parents, including the driver, police chief Scott Raynes said.
The girl transported to St. Anne’s was later pronounced deceased by hospital personnel; the girl at Hasbro was in stable condition Monday morning.
Police called in the Rhode Island State Police Collision Reconstruction Forensic Services units. They determined that the UTV was being driven in the grassy field by a 16-year-old juvenile. At some point the driver lost control and the vehicle rolled over, ejecting the driver and all six passengers.
The investigation is ongoing and the driver is being charged with felony driving to endanger, death resulting, and felony driving to endanger with serious bodily injury.
The driver was held overnight at the Rhode Island Training School pending an arraignment in Providence Family Court.
In a press release issued Monday morning, Little Compton Police Chief Scott Raynes thanked the Little Compton Fire Department, Tiverton Fire department and state police for their assistance.
“Lastly, we would also like to extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends affected by this tragedy.”
