East Providence Police K9 achieves a first in Rhode Island

Last week East Providence Police K9 Nick earned an unprecedented accolade for the city, receiving a certification in explosive odor tracking.

The department, in a post on their Facebook page, said that K9 Nick was the only K9 in the state to obtain the specialized certification.

“Another milestone for our East Providence Police Explosive K9 team,” the post reads. “Explosive Odor Tracking trains dogs to detect explosive odors carried through the air by a moving person and follow that scent back to its source, even through a crowd. This skill adds another layer of protection at public events and busy gathering places.”

“A special thank you to Todd Mona, trainer for the Capital Region Training Group, for his guidance, dedication, and hard work in preparing them for this milestone,” the post added.
