PROVIDENCE — Bay View senior Gianna Spremullo was the standout among the local athletes who competed in the 2020 RIIL Swimming State Championships Saturday, Feb. 29, at Brown University’s Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.

The Tulane University-bound Spremullo won both the girls’ 100 yard backstroke and the 200 individual medley titles for the third year in a row. She clocked a time of 55.93 to take the backstroke and a 2:04.83 in the 200IM.

Spremullo was also part of the Bengals’ winning 200 medley relay team (1:51.21) that included Margaret Mahoney, Juliana Goncalves and Melina Cabral.

More girls’ notes
Overall, Bay View placed third in the team standings with 172 points. Barrington captured its sixth consecutive girls’ state title with 304.5 points and LaSalle was second with 229.

East Providence High School finished 20th with 22 points on the efforts of junior Raissa Luu, who placed sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:00.18) and ninth in the 100 back. LaSalle sophomore Sonia Mlakar won the fly in 58.14.

Providence Country Day scored 10 points to place 22nd. The team of Emma DiGiacomo, Zoe Webster, Rachel Baker and Sydni Diehl swam 13th with a time of 1:38.31 in the 200 free relay, won by Barrington in a new state record time of 1:38.31. Katherine Castonas clocked a 2:27.96 to place 15th in the 200 IM.

Boys’ notes
Senior Yanis Benadouda led the EPHS boys’ contingent to 17th place in the team standings as the Providence College-bound performer placed fourth in both the 200 free and 100 back.

Benadouda clocked a 1:48.67 in the 200 free, won by Hendricken’s Nick Andrews in 1:45.91. In the 100 back, the Townies’ standout swam a 53.41. Cumberland’s Ian Horstkamp-Vinekar won the state title in 52.09.

David Capobianco accounted for the other EPHS point. The junior was 16th in the 500 free with a time of 5:37.63. Hendricken’s Andrews won the event in 4:49.34.

Hendricken won the boys’ team title for the sixth year in a row and 33rd time overall with 426 points. Barrington was second with 329. Portsmouth and Moses Brown shared third with 168 apiece. The Townies scored 31 and Providence Country Day 15 to place 21st.

The Knights’ points came from as 12th place result in the 200 free relay as Pedro Conceicao, Aiden Trendell, Ethan Potvin and Evan Sucov clocked a 1:41.55. Barrington won the event in 1:28.88. The same PCD quartet placed 15th (1:53.03) in the 200 medley relay, won by Barrington in 1:37.3. Trendell earned the other point for the Knights with a 16th place swim (1:00.68) in the 100 back.
