Eagles rally for key victory over Knights, 70-65
Barrington boys improve to 13-7 overall, 11-5 in division
Nick Scandura hit two key baskets with less than two minutes remaining and helped the Barrington High School boys basketball team defeat Central, 70-65 in a Division I matchup on Tuesday night, Feb. 7.
The victory improved Barrington’s record to 11-5 in the division and 13-7 overall.
Barrington led 61-60 with 1:36 remaining in the game when Scandura knocked down a three-pointer. A short time later, Scandura extended Barrington’s lead to 66-60 when he drove hard to the basket and hit a lay-up.
BHS teammate Matt Raffa also came through in crunch-time. After Central cut the lead to 66-62, Raffa was fouled and sank both ends of a one-and-one at the free throw line.
Central’s Jesus Folger then buried a three-pointer, making the score 68-65 — a one-possession game — with eight seconds to play. Again, Raffa stepped up and sank both free-throws in a one-and-one situation at the line. The shots secured the victory for Barrington.
A number of players made key contributions for the Eagles. Seniors Sean Bonneau and Dan Coogan connected on a huge play late in the game. With the Eagles trailing 60-59, Bonneau passed the ball to Coogan who scored and gave Barrington the lead. Bonneau and Coogan — who were recognized during the Senior Night celebration that game — finished with 10 points each. (Coogan scored all of his points in the second half.)
Raffa and Scandura led the Eagles in scoring with 24 and 22 points, respectively.
Owen Pfeffer played stellar defense throughout the game and scored two points. Ryan Rigamonti hit a big basket in the fourth quarter, and Spencer Proulx and Matt Leonard provided valuable minutes off the bench for the Eagles.
“I can't thank the students and community enough,” wrote BHS Coach Mike Raffa in an email to the Barrington Times. “You continue to create an unbelievable home court advantage and an amazing environment for our student athletes. It was an incredible tribute to our seniors Sean Bonneau and Dan Coogan.”
Barrington is scheduled to play at Mount Pleasant on Friday night. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
