Barrington School Committee Question of the week

Question: What steps, if any, could Barrington High School take to better prepare students for college and/or career?

Sarah Whiting — Democrat:

BHS provides a strong foundation. In a rapidly changing world, we need our students’ critical thinking, cooperation, communication, and adaptability to be rock solid and practiced beyond the classroom. College acceptance and a first job are milestones. Our students also need judgment and relationships to navigate what follows. I am still thinking about how our community’s extraordinary network could open more doors through mentorships, internships, and real problems to solve.

Adam Stearnbourne — Democrat:

Barrington High already does a lot right: 97% of students graduate on time, and 87% enroll in college within a year, far above the state. To build on that, I’d grow career pathways and internships for students not headed to college and look closely at this year’s dips in math and science. As a professor, I’d also focus on what my students need most: writing, time management and the confidence to ask for help.

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
