As I run for re-election to the School Committee, I believe it is important to reaffirm the principles that guide my service and the responsibilities I take seriously as an elected official.
Every student deserves fairness and the opportunity to succeed. My goal as a school Committee member, is to keep our focus on the primary mission of our schools: educating students. Which means, to ensure that all students have access to the educational opportunities, resources, and support necessary to reach their full potential. Our schools should provide an environment where every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and pursue their interests. While individual outcomes may vary, every student deserves a fair opportunity to achieve success.
One of my continued concerns is the reduction of essential classroom resources, including teacher assistants, reading specialists, and math specialists. I believe these positions play an important role in identifying and supporting students who are struggling or at risk of falling through the cracks. I have continued to advocate for these resources because students need support before they fall behind, not after they have already struggled. This district falls short of this. Decisions about staffing must carefully consider the impact on classroom instruction, individualized support, and student achievement. Research has examined the relationship between staffing and academic outcomes, and I believe our district must take these factors seriously when making budgetary decisions.
We must address the gaps that currently exist. Improving the educational experience requires thoughtful leadership, responsible allocation of resources, and a willingness to acknowledge where we are missing the mark. These efforts can help support stronger academic performance and improved student achievement. With our five year strategic plan coming to an end, and a new one formulating, I hope leadership can own up to what didn’t work and change course (ie. teacher instructional coaches should be eliminated and those funds reallocated to support students directly).
I also continue to question the reliance on web-based learning in grades K–5. Young children need strong foundational skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and critical thinking, and I believe direct instruction, meaningful teacher interaction, and hands-on learning must remain at the center of their educational experience. I have raised concerns and shared supporting information regarding the potential drawbacks of excessive screen-based learning at these critical developmental stages. Due to my consistent discussion, leadership has started to dwindle screen time in grades K-2; It’s a start but not enough.
I remain committed to communication and transparency. While some progress has been made over the last four years, transparency remains a work in progress within our district. Families, educators, and taxpayers deserve clear communication, meaningful engagement, and confidence that decisions are being made in the best interests of students and the community.
Serving in the minority has limited my ability to turn certain priorities into action, but it has not changed my commitment to advocating for students, asking difficult questions, and pushing for greater accountability and transparency.
My commitment is to continue working toward a district where every student has the opportunity to succeed and every decision is guided by what is best for our children and our community.
