Letter: Bristol not immune to political malpractice at the highest level

Posted

To the editor:

We like to think only local matters are important to us here in Bristol, but we are subject to world politics nevertheless. Bristol is composed entirely of immigrants from the Azores, from Sicily, from Scandinavia, Canada and Europe, and a few real indigenous people. We were reduced this week  to being spectators rather than active participants in the new trade and defense Alliance of the EU and Canada that excludes the USA.

Our ancestors throughout Europe now will become our protagonists, not of our choosing, but because of the short-sighted self-interested greed and stupidity of our fascist president who has declared war on Danish Greenland for its minerals, and Canada for its natural resources and is withdrawing our troops from Europe and South Korea.

Having lost many beloved relatives in the defense of Europe, I loathe the thought of the USA being in an active war, economic or otherwise, where my own grandsons and granddaughters and perhaps yours are enrolled in the defense regiments of an enemy alliance, leaving us facing our own relatives across the trenches. This is political malpractice at the highest level and sheer lunacy!

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
