Barrington students earn gold and silver for their work

Two cows, a fox, a flying insect and a monkey wearing hand-cuffs helped a group of Barrington High School students earn art awards recently.

Five students — Julia Bowen, Yiran Jia, Alexa Jurgeleit, Ingrid Kenyon and Vivian Tian — received Rhode Island Scholastic Art Awards for their creations. Yiran was selected for a Gold Key for her drawing of a monkey in chains. She was also presented an honorable mention award for a second drawing.

Silver Key awards went to Julia for drawing, and Alexa, Ingrid and Vivian for their sculptures.

More than 100 of the recent RI Scholastic Art Awards were included in an exhibit at the Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery at Salve Regina University in Newport. It was the seventh straight year that the gallery featured the student works.

A number of Barrington High School students were selected for Rhode Island Scholastic Art Awards honorable mentions:

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
