Barrington police charged a 16-year-old East Providence boy with reckless driving on Wednesday, Feb. 17, after he reportedly took his mom's car for a fast-moving joyride.

An officer was patrol on the Wampanoag Trail (Route 114) at about 2 a.m. when he spotted a vehicle traveling south at a high rate of speed. The officer began following the vehicle, which turned around and began heading north, also at a high rate of speed. The officer reportedly clocked the vehicle at 107 miles per hour.

Police ordered the vehicle over to the side of the road; the speeding vehicle's brakes were smoking as it came to a stop. An officer approached the driver's side window and spoke to the operator, the 16-year-old East Providence boy.

The teenager said he did not have a license and had taken his mother's car without her permission. The officer could also smell a faint odor of marijuana. Police contacted the boy's mother and told her to come pick up the vehicle. Then they charged the teenager.
