Where to vote in Portsmouth in Tuesday’s primary

Polls will be combined for R.I. First Congressional District Primary

Posted

PORTSMOUTH — The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, for the Rhode Island First Congressional District Primary.

The Democratic primary has a crowded field, with 11 candidates running for the R.I. District 1 seat that was vacated by David N. Cicilline when he resigned from Congress in late May.

Those candidates are Walter Berbrick, Allen R. Waters, Spencer Dickinson, J. Aaron Regunberg, Sabina Matos, Stephen M. Casey, Gabriel Amo, John Goncalves, Stephanie Beaute, Sandra C. Cano, and Ana Quezada. (Democrat Donald R. Carlson recently dropped out of the race, but his name will still appear on the ballot.)

Two Republicans are squaring off in that party’s primary: Gerry W. Leonard, Jr., and Terri Flynn.

Polls will be combined for this special primary election. Unless you’re participating in early voting, here’s where you’ll go to cast your ballot on Tuesday:

• Precinct 2701 — Hope Brown Center at Farnham Farm, Prudence Island

• Precincts 2702 and 2703 combined: CFP Arts, Wellness and Community Center, 933 Anthony Road (If you voted at the Portsmouth High School field house in 2022, you’ll cast your ballot here.)

• Precincts 2704 and 2705 combined: Portsmouth Friends Church, 11 Middle Road (If you voted in the Portsmouth Town Hall Council Chambers in 2022, you’ll cast your ballot here.)

• Precincts 2706 and 2707 combined: St. Barnabas Church Parish Hall, 1697 East Main Road (If you voted at Portsmouth Middle School in 2022, you’ll cast your ballot here.)

Early/emergency voting only will be conducted at Portsmouth Town Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

In accordance with state law, poll workers will ask you to show photo ID when you vote at your polling site.

To vote in the Democratic Primary, you must be registered to vote as a Democrat, or be unaffiliated. To vote in the Republican Primary, you must be registered to vote as a Republican, or be unaffiliated. You must be registered to vote from your actual place of residence.

Early voting continues at Town Hall during business hours and ends at 4 p.m. on Sept. 5. The building’s regular hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday; and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Wednesday.
