PORTSMOUTH — With new head coach Keith MacDonald at the helm, the Portsmouth High School varsity football team is getting some hard knocks in to prepare for the start of the 2023 season.

On Saturday morning the Patriots played a varsity scrimmage against Middletown High on the turf field at PHS.

This year’s team captains are Ben Blythe, Jack Voute, Chase Fanning, Chris Cox, and Tyler Hurd.

The team will play Rogers High in an Injury Fund game at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31, at Barrington High School.

The Patriots kick off their season at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8, in a non-league road game against North Kingstown.

They’ll face Westerly in a league game, also on the road, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15.

The home opener is a non-league contest against Bishop Hendricken at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
