PORTSMOUTH — It looked like the Patriots were headed toward a glorious comeback, but it was not to be.

In the quarterfinals of the Division I volleyball playoffs, Portsmouth found itself down two sets to none to visiting La Salle Academy Thursday night in the PHS field house.

The Rams looked like the superior team early on, winning the first two sets handily by scores of 25-18 and 25-10. The third set went point for point before the Patriots edged La Salle, 25-23.

Portsmouth was up 8-0 at one point in the fourth set, but it ended up being another tight contest with Portsmouth prevailing, 25-22.

In the shortened fifth set, however, the Rams nipped the Patriots, 15-13, winning the match by 3-2.
