PHS cross-country teams place 5th in class meet

Eleni Drosinos finishes 12th for best showing by Patriots

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School cross-country teams each finished fifth in Saturday’s Rhode Island Class B Championships at Ponaganset High School.

The PHS girls’ team posted an average time of 22:40.04 over the 5-kilometer course, good enough for 138 points and fifth place. East Greenwich took first in the girls’ meet, with an average time of 19:50.76, and 26 points,

The PHS boys’ team averaged 18:36.56 over the 5K course, scoring 137 points for fifth place. Barrington High was the top team in the boys’ meet, posting an average time of 16:57.46, and scoring 31 points.

The best overall showing among either Patriots team was by Eleni Drosinos, a freshman who ran the course in 21:09.4, good enough for 12th place.

Here’s how the PHS other girls did:

• Addie Dalton (sophomore), 30th, 22:39.4

• Kyra Siebens (freshman), 32nd, 22:55.7

• Hanalei Streuli (freshman), 34th, 23:16.6

• Reilly Porado (freshman), 35th, 23:19.1

• Mae Marston (freshman), 38th, 23:38.1

• Elise Kirwin (senior), 43rd, 24:43.7

Chris Vachon, a sophomore, led the PHS boys, taking 18th place with a time of 18:00.7. Here’s how the rest of his team did:

• Kevin Sullivan (senior), 24th, 18:14.7  

• Jack Marston (sophomore), 29th, 18:41.7

• Drew Forch (sophomore), 31st, 18:45.9

• Hayden White (senior), 41st, 19:19.8

• Wake Zani (senior), 53rd, 20:10.5

• Jae Defalco (junior), 57th, 20:20.9

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
