PORTSMOUTH — The late Richard “Foxy” Marshall, who led the Portsmouth High School varsity football team to six state Super Bowl titles in the ’80s and ’90s, is among the new inductees who will be honored at the third annual PHS Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony set for Saturday, Oct. 5.

The 2019 honorees are former athletes, coaches and special contributors to the Portsmouth High School athletic program, along with the 1991 girls’ soccer team that secured the first true girls’ state championship in school history, as well as the 1992 girls’ gymnastics state championship team.

“This year’s class is our largest to date, honoring student athletes from four different decades from the 1960s to the ’90s,” said John F. Blaess., chairman of the Portsmouth High Athletic Hall of Fame. “We are honoring former athletes from a variety of athletic offerings, including those who went on to have outstanding collegiate careers as well as a few that played in professional sports.”

He added, “We will be remembering posthumously football coach Richard “Foxy” Marshall and are hoping for a good turnout from his former players, or, as he used to say, ‘his boys.’

Mr. Marshall died in 1995 at the age of 56.

“Also being honored is longtime and award-winning reporter Rick McGowan from the Newport Daily News as our media inductee,” Mr. Blaess said.

“We are also very pleased to be honoring the first two girls’ Division I state championship teams PHS produced — the 1991 soccer team as well as the 1992 gymnastics team,” said Mr. Blaess. “I was the athletic director at the time and the entire school community was thrilled with the performances of these two teams during the fall and winter seasons.”

The induction ceremony, to be held at the Green Valley Country Club on Union Street, will begin with a cocktail hour and hors d'oeuvres at 4:30 p.m., followed by the induction ceremony.
