Father Edmund Adams, a monk of Portsmouth Abbey, died peacefully after a brief illness in Newport Hospital on Christmas Eve, aged 77.
Christened Thomas Frederick Adams, he was born in Cambridge, Mass. He is predeceased by his family: his father, Frederick Johnstone Adams of London, England; his mother, Keith Folger Adams of Bronxville, N.Y.; and brother, Benjamin Folger Adams of Albuquerque, NM.
Tom entered the then Portsmouth Priory School as a second-former and eventually went on to earn his doctorate at the University of Washington in Seattle. Before coming back to the Abbey, he worked as assistant professor of English at University of Toledo (Ohio). He made his profession as a monk at the Abbey in 1984 and was ordained a priest in 1989.
Having always been grateful for the mentoring and kindness shown to him as a young boy, he devoted his monastic life to the service of the students, not only in the classroom but also in the residential houses and on the athletic fields. May he rest in peace.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered for him Friday, Jan. 6, at 10:30 a.m. in the Abbey Church with burial following in the Abbey cemetery.
