Nobody was injured, but a dog perished in a house fire on Pottersville Road in Little Compton Wednesday evening.

Little Compton crews were called to 99 Pottersville Road at 6:36 p.m. and members of the Westport, Tiverton, Portsmouth, Middleton, Warren and Rehoboth fire departments also assisted, fire chief Richard Petrin said.

When they arrived at the isolated spot about 700 feet off Pottersville, Petrin said fire fighters encountered a pretty significant fire in an apartment above a two-car garage. — “it was pushing pretty heavy smoke when they pulled up,” he said.

Though crews were able to keep the fire from spreading, the chief said they were unable to save one of three dogs living in the apartment with their owner.

Petrin said the fire does not appear suspicious, but is still being investigated. The man and two surviving dogs are being sheltered by the Red Cross, the chief said.
