Anthony A. Brown, 90, Portsmouth

Anthony A. Brown, 90, of Portsmouth, R.I., passed away on June 5, 2020, at the Grand Islander Nursing Home in Middletown.

Anthony was born on May 30, 1930, in Portsmouth, R.I., to the late August Brown and the late Rita (Costa) Brown.

Anthony graduated from Rogers High School in 1951 and enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he proudly served for eight years, and was honorably discharged in 1959. He was a past sexton at St. Antony's Catholic Church in Portsmouth during the tenure of Father Buckley, and worked as a polisher for a local jewelry manufacturer. Anthony was also a past Grand Knight and life member of the Portsmouth Knights of Columbus.

Anthony is survived by his cousin, Robert L. Bernard and his wife Diolinda B. Abilheria, of Fulshear, Texas, as well as numerous other nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Jessee Brown, Louis Brown, Mary Spooner, Catherine Brown and twins Olympia "Brownie" Brown, and Cecelia "Ginger" Brown.

His private burial will take place in the family plot in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Fall River, Mass.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
