Avenge lone loss with win over UCAP in semis
JOHNSTON — The Riverside Middle School boys’ cagers avenged their lone loss of the season and advanced to the Rhode Island Principals Committee on Athletics (RIPCOA) state championship basketball game with a 77-40 win over UCAP in the semifinals Tuesday, Feb. 11, in Johnston.
The Vikings ran out to an early lead with tough defense and led 42-14 at half. Xavier Hazard led the Vikings with 26 points, Trey Rezendes III had 22 points, and Skyller Garcia 12. Other contributors included Kenaz Ochogwu (6 points 4 blocks), Cameron Evora (4 points), Domenic Miatao (3 points), Darius Davis and Gavin Palumbo (2 points each).
RMS was scheduled to play in the championship Thursday evening. Feb. 13, at 6 p.m. at Cranston East High School.
UCAP was the lone team to defeat RMS (93-67) during the regular season. The loss to the Vikings in the semis proved to be UCAP's only defeat of the winter (15-1).
