Mt. Hope Sports Notes: Levis' brace boosts Huskies in boys' soccer season opener

MHHS girls' volleyball picks up first win in return to Division I

Posted

The Mt. Hope High School boys' soccer team began its 2026 Division II regular season with a 2-1 victory over host Pilgrim on the road Wednesday night, Sept. 2, in Providence at Johnson & Wales University.

Tom Levis netted both of the Huskies' goals for the brace. Kobe King had an assist. New starting keeper Andrew Vieira had five saves.

Mt. Hope, which also cruised to a 3-0 victory over Middletown in its non-league Injury Fund outing the week prior, starts up the home portion of its league slate Friday afternoon, Sept. 4, when the Huskies host Narragansett at Roger Williams University. Opening kick is set for 5 o'clock. The Mariners are coming off a 2-0 loss to D-I Chariho in their first regular season match.

Girls' volleyball
The MHHS girls' volleyball club picked up its first victory of the 2026 season in its second match upon its return to the Division I ranks as the Huskies edged Coventry on the road Tuesday night, Sept. 1, by a 3-2 count.

Mt. Hope won by the scores of 25-19, 12-25, 25-21, 28-18 and 15-11. Margaret Thorp led the Huskies' attack with 15 kills. She also had 21 digs and chipped in five service aces. Hayden Sylvia assisted on 27 points, added 12 digs and a pair of aces. Stella Hill had four kills, four digs and three blocks.

"We played really well as a team tonight," said MHHS assistant coach Mia Pedula. "Our middles did a great job reading Coventry’s hitters and setting up blocks, which was something we worked on in practice and executed well tonight. Our setter made smart decisions and consistently set our hitters up for success. Defensively, we were scrappy and kept balls alive, we served very aggressive, and our energy was great throughout the match. We really gritted it out."

Girls' tennis
The MHHS girls' tennis team opened last week with a narrow, 4-3, loss to Middletown in a Division II contest Monday, Aug. 31.

Things were looking good for the locals at the completion of singles plays after MHHS won three of the four matches. Kaia Brown (6-2, 6-2) won her season debut atop the Huskies' ladder while Hazel Bradley (1-and-2) and Emma Sorrentino (1-and-1) added wins from the three and four spots.

The Islanders, however, swept three tight doubles contests, including a three-set win over Mt. Hope's Marissa Cabral and Kayla Sousa (6-0, 3-6, 6-2) at third pairs.

The Huskies suffered a one-sided defeat to host Rogers in their next outing, Wednesday, Sept. 2, in Newport as the host Vikings won by the score of 6-2. Rogers swept the four singles matches in straight sets.

Dufficy (4-and-3) and Bradley (2-and-4) played the most competitive of the contests. The Vikings won two of the three doubles matches, also in two sets, forfeiting the last. Mt. Hope fell to 0-3 at the time.

Girls' soccer
The MHHS girls' soccer team headed to Providence for its first road game of the 2026 season Tuesday night, Sept. 1, to face LaSalle in a rematch of last fall's Division I playoff semifinal contest won by the host Rams, 1-0. Last week, LaSalle had a much easier time of it, cruising to a 7-0 victory over the Huskies, who fell to 0-2-0.
