Bristol Police Officer Zachary Kretchman was recently presented with the Paul Harris Fellow Award by the Bristol Rotary Club in recognition of his bravery and quick thinking during an early morning house fire.
On Aug. 31, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Kretchman was conducting routine patrols near Meadow Lane, checking schools and bus stops in preparation for the first day of school, when he spotted a generator on fire in the driveway of a home at 16 Meadow Lane.
Kretchman immediately notified dispatch and requested assistance from the Bristol Fire Department before approaching the home to alert the sleeping family. As he approached, the generator exploded, spreading flames to the exterior of the residence.
Kretchman quickly contacted the homeowner and helped evacuate six people, including children. Although the fire caused significant damage to the home's siding, roof and attic, all occupants escaped without injury.
Bristol Rotary Club President Johnathon Birs praised Kretchman's actions during the award presentation, noting that his vigilance and quick thinking may have prevented a tragic loss of life.
"That is where training meets instinct, where professionalism meets courage, and where a commitment to public service becomes something far greater than simply doing one's job," Birs said.
The Paul Harris Fellow Award, named in honor of Rotary's founder, recognizes individuals whose contributions reflect the organization's commitment to humanitarian service and its guiding principle, "Service Above Self."
Birs noted that although Kretchman is not a Rotarian, his actions exemplify the organization's values and commitment to serving others.
"Officer Kretchman, you represent the very best of Bristol," Birs said. "We thank you, we commend you, and we are proud to honor you today."
