Barrington schools shine on state test results

Posted

Twenty-five percent of the state’s five-star schools are located in Barrington.

Barrington Superintendent of Schools Dr. Holly Hageman, and Assistant Superintendent Ruth Corley shared that good news with district families on Friday morning, Oct. 9. Hageman and Corley highlighted the 2026 state test results and school accountability ratings from the Rhode Island Department of Education.

“We are proud to share that all six Barrington schools earned four or five stars,” stated the press release.

“Rhode Island has just 16 five-star schools, and four of them are here in Barrington: Barrington Middle School, Hampden Meadows School, Nayatt School and Sowams Elementary School.”

In addition, Barrington High School and Primrose Hill School are both four-star schools. Every public school in Barrington matched its rating from the previous year, officials said.

“Across the district, Barrington earned RIDE's ‘Strong Performance’ mark on 13 of 14 measures, including graduation rate, student growth in reading and math, attendance and postsecondary success,” stated the release.

MLL services

Hageman and Corley highlighted the success of the district’s multilingual learners, or MLLs, whose first language is not English and who receive support while they build English proficiency.

“Their reading proficiency rose 16 points over last year, and we have students who recently completed MLL services now outperforming their peers in both reading and math,” stated the release.

“Barrington High School is the only school in our district with enough multilingual learners (MLL) to be rated on English language proficiency, and that measure determined its rating. We are already adding MLL teacher support and training at the high school to build on this work, including becoming only one of two districts in Rhode Island approved by RIDE to provide its own MLL proficiency professional learning to meet new state regulations.”

As a reminder

In the press release, Hageman and Corley emphasized that state tests are only one snapshot of learning.

“They don't capture the creativity, curiosity, kindness, and strength we see in our students every single day, or the care and talent our teachers and staff bring to every classroom,” stated the release.

Individual student score reports will be mailed home to students’ families once schools receive them from the state. In addition, the district’s leadership will present a detailed review of the results to the Barrington School Committee in November.

Full 2026 assessment results are available on RIDE's Assessment Data Portal, and school accountability results are on RIDE's Report Card Portal.
