The Barrington School Committee leadership is not running for re-election.
Neither TJ Peck, the chairman of the committee, nor Frazier Bell, the vice chairman, submitted nomination forms to run for office. The seats currently occupied by Peck and Bell are both up for election this year.
Bell offered a statement regarding his time on the school committee: “I ran because I felt the school committee needed more people who could listen to and hear everyone’s concerns. Serving Barrington has been an incredible opportunity and a real honor, and I’m grateful for the chance to give back to the community. At the same time, I always planned to serve just one term and make the most of that time.”
Peck and Bell are Independents who were elected to the school committee in 2022. Peck was the top vote-getter in the 2022 election, followed closely by Bell. The two Independent candidates finished ahead of two Democrats.
Peck’s and Bell’s soon-to-be open seats on the school committee will be filled by two Democrats — the only people to file nomination papers for the Barrington School Committee are Democrats Adam Stearnbourne and Sarah Whiting.
Stearnbourne and Whiting will join Democrat Tim McNamara, and Independents Karen Rasnick and Liz Singh on the committee.
Town council race
The Barrington Town Council will feature a four-way race for the two soon-to-be open seats.
Independents Neile Hartman and Tony Arico and Democrats Braxton Cloutier (the incumbent council president) and Jessica M. Martin have submitted nomination papers.
Current council member Kate Berard did not submit a nomination form to run for re-election. Berard is a Democrat as are sitting councilors Liana Cassar, Jordan Jancosek and Kerry O’Neill.
Other races
There will be a primary in the race for the Rhode Island House of Representatives District 67 seat. Barrington’s Nicole Jellinek and Warren’s Ronald Jarvais are Democrats running for the seat that will be vacated by Rep. Jason Knight, who is running for Rhode Island Attorney General.
The winner of the Democratic primary will face Independent candidate Joe DePasquale in the general election. DePasquale is the current president of the Warren Town Council.
Rep. Jennifer Boylan will run unopposed for re-election to the RI House District 66 seat, and Sen. Pam Lauria will run unopposed for re-election to the RI Senate District 32 seat. Rep. Boylan and Sen. Lauria are Democrats.
Richard Staples, a Democrat, is running for re-election for Barrington Town Moderator.
