A Barrington man is facing a felony assault charge following a stabbing on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 20.
Barrington Police said John D. Ciliberto, age 66, from 150 Whipple Ave., stabbed a 67-year-old Riverside man in the chest multiple times. Police said the reason for the attack is not yet clear. Police said the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Barrington Police charged Ciliberto with one count of felony assault and one count of assault on a person over 60 causing serious bodily harm.
East Providence Police contacted Barrington PD at about 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20 regarding a possible stabbing in Barrington. Barrington Police detectives met with East Providence Police at Rhode Island Hospital, where they interviewed the victim. The Riverside man told police he was stabbed in the chest by a person he knows. He said the attacked occurred in Barrington.
“Through most of the evening, members of the BPD, from all bureaus, diligently investigated the incident culminating in an arrest warrant and a search warrant,” stated a press release from Barrington Police Chief Michael Correia.
Shortly after midnight, Barrington Police, armed with warrants, went to 150 Whipple Ave.
“After receiving no response to repeated knocks on the door, the door was forced open, officers entered, and Mr. Ciliberto was placed into custody without incident or injury,” stated the press release. “Mr. Ciliberto was transported to police headquarters where he processed and charged.”
Police said Ciliberto was transported to Sixth Division District Court for arraignment on Wednesday morning, however, “Mr. Ciliberto required medical treatment for issues unrelated to his arrest and is currently awaiting treatment at RI Hospital.”
Chief Correia “praised the BPD for their professionalism and determination while investigating the incident and arresting the suspect with no injuries to all involved.” He also thanked members of the East Providence Police Department for their assistance.
