The Barrington High School wrestling team won out-of-state tournaments in back-to-back weekends.

On Saturday, Dec. 13, the Eagles traveled to Scituate, Mass. for the 2025 Kevin Curtis Invitational, where they took on 15 Massachusetts teams. After early-round successes, the Eagles racked up points and placers. The first nine weight-class wrestlers advanced to the semifinals. In the semis, seven Eagles came out on top and advanced to the finals, putting a finalist in half of the wrestled weight classes. In four other weight classes, Barrington wrestlers battled back through the consolation brackets to earn places on the podium.

Going into the final placing rounds, the Eagles had already locked up their first invitational championship in 30 years, but they were not done there. In the finals, the team piled on points with four champions: Logan Medeiros at 126 pounds, James Rocco at 144 pounds, Caleb Appleyard at 150 pounds, and Owen DiOrio at 157 pounds.

The team’s other finalists were Lucas Enos at 106 pounds, Hayden Genetti at 113 pounds, and James Lafreniere at 120 pounds. Other place winners on the day were Gavin Munzert taking third at 132 pounds and Gunner Haas at 285 pounds and Noah Bernier at 138 pounds, each finishing fourth, and Kaleo Pan finishing fifth at 165 pounds. Garrett McManaman also added on some team points throughout the day.

To go along with their medals, the Eagles took home some other hardware with all the coaches at the tournament voting James Rocco for the Outstanding Wrestler award.

The team took home the first-place trophy with an overall score of 256 points, finishing ahead of second place Weymouth at 182 points and third place Hingham with 169.5 pounds.

BHS Coach Sean Magee said, “Coach Genetti or I have head coached this program consecutively since the winter of 2002. The years before that, either I was an assistant or he wrestled for the program since 1996. We’ve been involved in a lot of years of wrestling here, and this was our most dominant performance. We’ve had lots of seconds and thirds as a team over the years, but nothing like this.”

Win in Waterford

This past Saturday, the Eagles again took on out-of-state competition, this time at the 2025 Lancer Invitational in Waterford, Conn. Barrington was one of three Rhode Island teams taking on competition of 12 other teams from throughout Connecticut.

Missing a few starters, the Barrington squad only filled 11 of the 14 weight classes but again put out a commanding performance. Seven of the 11 BHS grapplers reached the semifinals of their 16-person brackets, with five advancing to the finals. After wrestle-backs in the consolation brackets, nine wrestlers remained for the medaling round.

Going into the final medaling round, the Eagles trailed the hosts, Waterford High School, by nine points. With fewer wrestlers remaining in the competition, the team knew everyone had to perform at their best to have a chance at a second title in as many weeks.

Every Barrington wrestler in a medaling match won, almost all by pin, adding extra team points. In the gold medal matches 106 - Lucas Enos, 113 - Hayden Genetti, 126 - Logan Medeiros, 144 - James Rocco and 150 - Caleb Appleyard, all came out victorious. At 157, Owen DiOrio took home third, with 132- Gavin Munzert, 165 - Kaleo Pan and 285 - Gunner Haas all taking fifth. Their efforts along with Liam Jacob and Noah Bernier who scored points throughout the day was enough to overcome their team point deficits to win the tournament by nearly 20 points.  Barrington finished the day with 213 team points ahead of second place Waterford with 193.5 and third place Southington with 175.

Assistant coach Drew Genetti said, “Our kids have been working so hard all off-season to be ready for this. All of our starters wrestled this offseason together, and they have been pushing each other every day in practice. The past two Saturday’s showed that hard work is paying off.” In the final medaling round, that showed to be true.

James Rocco again was voted the Outstanding Wrestler by the tournament’s seven officials, continuing to show he’s one of the top wrestlers in New England.

“James is the leader of our team, he sets the tone in practice and everyone looks up to the pace he sets,” stated BHS coaches. “Not only is he a great wrestler but he has been a great leader for our young team, only he and one other senior are in our starting lineup… With seven sophomores and four juniors, he gives that presence on the mat that others look to be. It’s not just seen by us but other schools coaches and the officials wherever we go.”

The Eagles wrestlers look to build off this early success as they get into their regular season dual meet schedule after the winter break.
