Westport cell phone tower will be online within weeks

The new cell phone tower at Drift and Masquesatch roads is up, but when can cell phone users expect better reception in lower Westport? It could be a matter of weeks, a representative from the firm that built the tower said this week.

CEO Peter Corry of Municipal Communications II LLC, an Atlanta firm that took the town to court over the right to build the 150-foot monopole tower, said Tuesday that so far, AT&T, Verizon and DISH have all signed on to put cellular arrays on the large tower.

"We don't have timing on when (they) will be installing, but ATT has their building permit and will be installing soon, over the next two to four weeks."

"Verizon, maybe a couple of weeks behind them, and then DISH should be coming on board shortly thereafter."

The tower was installed earlier this Spring, after the town and Municipal agreed to a settlement in US District Court following the town's denial two years ago of the firm's application to build in lower Westport. As part of the settlement, the town agreed to provide Municipal with the necessary permits to raise the structure, which many in Westport opposed on aesthetic grounds.
