Wildcats lose to Diman 9-4

Babb hits in the park homer

Posted

Outfielder Bella Babb hit an inside the park home run in the third inning of their first game played on the new field behind the high school as Westport fell to Diman 9-4 in a non-league game on Friday afternoon. The loss dropped the Wildcats record to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the MAC.

“We have a lot of new young players and some returning players,” said co-captain Sarah Perry. “So it’s a different vibe this season. I think we're gonna do pretty good, if we keep up the intensity and keep working at it,” said Perry.

The Westport offense smacked 6 hits and scored 1 run in the third, two in the sixth and 1 in the seventh.

Babb put the Wildcats on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. The freshman bashed an Ashley Carvalho fastball into the left field gap. Diman outfielders gave chase as the ball kept rolling all the way to the fence next to the soccer field. Babb easily rounded the bases and scored, cutting the lead to 5-1. Babb, hitting tenth, went 1 for 3 with an RBI. She hit the ball hard in all three of her plate appearances.

“It was an only a matter of time before Bella bombed one out there,” said co-captain Tess Silvia. “She may move up in the lineup after that one.”

Sophomore clean-up hitter Molly Costa belted a two-run double to right field, plating Julia George and Tess Silvia to slice the lead to 7-3.

Sophomore Samantha Bouchard singled home Mackenzy Ponte, who doubled, to make the score 9-4. Bouchard, a transfer from Bishop Connelly, has been good offensively for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats offense scored 34 runs in their 5 games this season. Makayla Grace mashed 5 hits and Tess Silvia hit four in their 21-4 win over Atlantis Charter on April 23.

We're gonna have a lot of games coming up,” said Silvia. We just got to keep working at it.”

Pitching

Ponte pitched all seven innings for the Wildcats. The junior ace struck out 7 and gave up 10 hits, 7 walks and 9 runs.

“I think I've been pitching pretty good,” said Ponte, who dropped her record to 2-1. Ponte struck out 11 in the Wildcat’s 9-7 win over Wareham and 15 in their 21-4 win over Atlantis Charter School.

Ponte who has been pitching since 7th grade, for once is not the only starter for the Wildcats. Bouchard, sophomore Gabby Montigny, freshman Makayla Grace  and junior Jayda Pequita are also helping out with pitching duties.

“It’s nice having some other girls that are good pitchers,” Ponte said.  “I’m not all worn out. I've been practicing a lot and I'm feel like I can come out stronger.”
