Most local ballot questions rejected

TIVERTON — With 100% of precincts reporting, the Tiverton Taxpayers Association (TTA) appears to have captured a majority of four of the seven positions on the newly elected Tiverton Town Council. Mail ballots have not yet been counted, but will be Wednesday morning, according to the Tiverton Town Clerk's office.

TIVERTON — With 100% of precincts reporting, the Tiverton Taxpayers Association (TTA) appears to have captured a majority of four of the seven positions on the newly elected Tiverton Town Council. Mail ballots have not yet been counted, but will be Wednesday morning, according to theTiverton Town Clerk's office.
TTA members elected are Donna Cook, Justin Katz, Nancy Driggs, and Robert Coulter. Others (non-TTA) elected to the remaining three positions are Denise deMedeiros, Joseph Perry, and Patricia Hilton.
Current town councilors who were defeated were John Edwards, Randy Lebeau, and Joan Chabot.
Elected to the school committee were Elaine Pavao, an incumbent, and Gloria Crist, a newcomer to the committee.
Long-time school committee member Deborah Pallasch lost in her bid for re-election.
Six new members were elected to the Tiverton Budget Committee: Deborah Janick, Joseph Sousa, Jeffrey Caron, Thomas Haley, Sheri Aakre, and Jennifer Joslyn. Of the six, four (Mr. Haley, Mr. Sousa, Mr. Caron, and Sheri Aakre) were TTA members.
Of the eight (8) local ballot questions that proposed changes to the Tiverton Home Rule Charter, six (6) were rejected, incl;uding one which would have limited the use of casino revenue to pay debt service, be used for capital development and infrastructure, and prohibited its use for the operation budget.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far.
