Quacky birthday, Erna!

They normally only live eight to 12 years, but volunteers and staff at West Place Animal Sanctuary in Tiverton recently helped sanctuary veteran Erna the Crested Pekin duck celebrate her 17th.

Erna is the last of the sanctuary's original rescues from 2007, and came from a Tiverton resident who, new to keeping ducks, let his birds nest. Before he knew it, he was overrun and gave Erna, and her now late brother Burton, to West Place. Erna's birthday party included special artwork and decorations, singing and rapping, and a birthday cake topped with blueberries — her favorite treat. Staff and volunteers recounted fond memories, read poetry, and took photos with Erna.

The sanctuary's Patrick Cole said that her incredible life and longevity exemplify what farm animals are capable of when given proper care, nutrition, and love. She also serves as a timely reminder that caring for any type of animal is a lifelong commitment, he said.
