A large stone is in place and a semi-circle of sod has been removed at the site for the newest memorial in town — a small space honoring the Dellefratte family’s years of service to the department of public works.

For years, the Dellefrattes petitioned for the memorial, stating that generations of male members of the family worked decades for the DPW, including the late Erasmo Dellefratte who served as the DPW superintendent years ago. Mike “Razzy” Dellefratte logged 40 years at the DPW, while his brother Billy worked for the town for 37 years. Billy Dellefratte actually owned the property at the corner of Foote Street and Prince’s Hill Avenue (the same land picked for the proposed memorial) which the family later sold to the town and is now part of Chianese Park. Gus Dellefratte and Tony Dellefratte also worked for the town.

Some Barrington Town Council members aired concerns with the size and scope of the initial plan for the memorial and the fact that the Dellefrattes wanted the town to pay up to $5,000 for the work.

Officials also agreed the town would not use taxpayer money to create the memorial, although some public works employees were at the site earlier this month assisting with the project; the three workers removed sod around the memorial and cleaned up the site.
