Westport's Fast Eddie celebrates 105th in the fast lane

WESTPORT — Birthday presents don’t come much bigger than the one presented to Eddie ‘Fast Eddie’ Beaulieu of Westport recently.

The occasion was Mr. Beaulieu’s 105th birthday, an occasion that called for something extraordinary.

To see it required a trip up to Fall River for the town’s oldest resident.

There, Mr. Beaulieu was able to see himself, bigger than life, high above Route 195 East near the Route 24 South exit. An immense billboard there carried the message, “Happy 105th Birthday Fast Eddie.” Next to that was a photo of Eddie waving from a vintage convertible.

Last year, Mr. Beaulieu celebrated his 104th with a car parade organized by David Palmer, who also leads the committee that organizes the town’s July 4 parade. Mr. Beaulieu waved from his front yard and, at one point, took a spin in a car.

Murray Outdoor Advertising, whose owners are friends of Mr. Beaulieu’s family, donated the billboard space, and enabled Mr. Beaulieu to wave to well-wishers from May 18-21, the days leading up to his Sunday, May 23, birthday.

Mr. Beaulieu is the long-time owner/operator of Beaulieu’s Garage (now run by his son) next door to his Sanford Road home).
