Posted

Hurricane Carol arrived on August 31, 1954, coinciding with high tide, and swept a wall of water across Horseneck and up the Westport River. To mark the 70th anniversary, the Westport Historical Society presents a new exhibition at Westport Free Public Library with images from its collection and photos held in private collections, which will span from Saturday, Feb. 3, to Saturday, March 30. The experiences of Westporters who witnessed the hurricane have been preserved in a video recording of an event marking the 50th anniversary of Carol in 2004. Many of the participants were teenagers in 1954.

WHEN: Beginning Saturday, Feb. 3

WHERE: Westport Free Public Library, 408 Old County Road, Westport

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
