Westport crash injures four, snarls Saturday beach traffic

WESTPORT — A Saturday morning multi-vehicle crash sent several people to the hospital and stalled beach-bound traffic in Westport.

Westport Detective Sergeant Christopher Dunn said that at approximately 10:51am, the Westport Police Department received several 911 calls regarding a crash at the intersection of Route 88 and Hixbridge Road. Preliminary reports indicated that several people had been injured and some were trapped in their vehicles.

When officers arrived, they found a red Toyota Rav 4 in the southbound lane facing west with the front windshield shattered. A second vehicle, a white Chevrolet Silverado, was lying on its passenger side off the roadway. A third vehicle, an International dump truck, was parked on Hixbridge Road. The officers requested four ambulances to tend to the injured parties.

A preliminary crash investigation by Officer Douglas Wenson revealed that the Toyota Rav 4 was traveling south on Route 88 at the intersection of Hixbridge Road. Witnesses to the crash said that the driver took a left hand turn through a red light into the northbound lanes of Route 88. The driver of the Silverado then crashed into the Rav 4 and collided with the dump truck that had been stopped at a red light facing west. After colliding with the dump truck, the Silverado rolled onto its driver’s side before coming to rest.

Drivers and all occupants suffered apparent minor injuries and were transported to Charlton Memorial and St. Luke’s Hospitals by ambulances from the Westport, Little Compton and Tiverton Fire Departments.

The Westport Police Department would like to thank an off duty St. Luke’s Hospital nurse who stopped to attend to vehicle occupants. She was able to assist in the triage of injured individuals but left the scene prior to being identified by officers or paramedics.

Westport Police also remind the public of the increase in traffic headed to state and local beaches. “We ask that you please take your time and drive carefully.”

The operator of the Rav 4 was cited for several motor vehicle violations.
