Two BHS standouts earn All-Region honors in field hockey

Abby Martel and Vivienne Mueller selected

Two members of the Barrington High School field hockey team — Abby Martel and Vivienne Mueller — recently earned spots on the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Region team.

The NFHCA only selected 136 student-athletes from across the entire country to its regional teams. Abby and Vivienne were two of the five players selected from Rhode Island. Abby earned the nod as a defender, while Vivienne was selected as a midfielder.

Barrington High School field hockey coach Anne Gasbarro was very excited to hear the news.

“I could not be prouder of these two players,” Coach Gasbarro said. “They work so hard and give so much to their teammates. BHS has a long successful field hockey tradition and these two have been huge contributors.”

Coach Gasbarro said the NFHCA only selected two defenders to the All-Region team for Southern New England and 10 defenders nationwide. She said Abby was fully deserving of the honor.

“Abby is a junior who has been a varsity starter since her freshman year. The team had nine shut-out games this season out of 13 regular season games,” she said. “Defense only allowed six goals to be scored the entire season.”

The BHS coach also heaped praise on Vivienne, who has been a four-year varsity starter at Barrington High School.

“Vivienne was the second-highest goal/assist scorer in the state this season,” Coach Gasbarro said. “She is a senior who is playing at Cornell next year. She was First Team All State…  She was part of the 2018 state championship team as a freshman.”
