State's unemployment rate remains the same for November

PROVIDENCE — The R.I. Department of Labor and Training announced in a press release Thursday, Dec. 20, that the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for November 2012 remained at 10.4 percent, unchanged from the October 2012 rate and seven-tenths of a percentage point from the November 2011 rate.

The U.S. unemployment rate was 7.7 percent in November 2012, down two-tenths of a percentage point from the previous month and down one percentage point over the year.

The number of unemployed R.I. residents—those residents classified as available for and actively seeking employment—was 58,600, down 100 from the October figure of 58,700. Over the year, the number of unemployed dropped by 4,100.

The number of employed R.I. residents was up 1,500 over the October figures, increasing to 506,200 in November. This represents the fourth consecutive monthly increase in employed Rhode Islanders and the highest employment level since March 2009.

Over the year, the number of employed R.I. residents increased 6,600 from

November 2011. The RI labor force totaled 564,800 in November 2012, up 1,400 from October 2012 and up 2,500 from November 2011. The state’s labor force is at its highest level since February 2011.
