The following are recent notes from the East Providence Police Department:

Fatal accident update
East Providence Police continue to investigate a fatal two-car collision that occurred on the evening of Friday, Aug. 18, in city on Pawtucket Avenue near both Catlin Avenue and Bowen Street.

Officers answered reports of a serious motor vehicle crash on Pawtucket Avenue just before 8 p.m. Upon arrival, responding officers identified two cars involved, a Subaru in the roadway and a Nissan in the front lawn of a residence on Pawtucket Avenue east at Bowen Street. They found three persons involved in the crash on scene: the two operators of the vehicles and one passenger, who were all eventually transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.

Brothers were seated in the Nissan, the passenger was identified as 24-year-old Jacob Crenshaw, from Pawtucket. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The driver of the Nissan, Andrew Crenshaw, 27 and also from Pawtucket, sustained serious injuries. At last check he remains in serious condition, but recovering. A 22 year-old male from Providence was the operator Subaru. He was treated and released.

The debris field reached well into the adjacent streets. Pieces of the vehicles were found in the yard of at least one resident into Bowen Street, some 100 feet away from the main scene.

As last week investigators sought the input of the public for assistance in the case, seeking any eyewitness video or information related to accident, specifically as the neon green Nissan convertible sports car travelled southbound and the 2018 gray Subaru Legacy heading north.

According to EPPD Chief Chris Francesconi speed remains as the assumed contributing factor. The investigation is ongoing. He said investigators are awaiting test results and are hoping to be able to speak to the driver, Andrew Crenshaw, soon.

Anyone with video or information is asked to contact either Sgt. Conor Debold at 401-270-3417 or Det. Kurt Ripke at 401-435-7600 ext. 20072.

Another fatal crash
The accident was the second fatal collision on the Rumford section of Pawtucket Avenue in just about two months. In late June, Kristen Ambra, 33, was the victim in a single-car crash at Pawtucket Avenue and Pleasant Street.
EPPD investigators initially indicated at the time that Amba struck a utility pole on the driver's side of her car.

School speed cams are back on
According to Francesconi, each of the school zone speed cameras, turned off in June at the end of the previous term, were turned back on as of Wednesday, Aug. 30, for the start of the 2023-24 year.

The school zone cameras are located on Pawtucket Avenue in front of St. Mary Academy-Bay View, Kent Heights Elementary School, St. Margaret School and East Providence High School as well as on Forbes Street in front of Riverside Middle School.

As a reminder, the cameras are in operation when school is in session each day from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. from late August to June. The cameras at night and on weekends. The fine for school zone infractions, per state law, is $50.

Recruitment stats
The EPPD recently announced is has hired 24 new officers, 13 of which are lateral transfers from other departments. With the anticipation of three more lateral transfers to be added shortly and three recruits currently attending the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy, the total number of new officers hired since 2022 will be 30.
