Proposed law would prohibit all parking on Maple Avenue

Ordinance proposed following downtown streetscape improvements

Posted

The Barrington Town Council has proposed legislation that would prohibit all on-street parking on Maple Avenue.

Currently, some on-street parking is allowed on the north side of Maple Avenue toward the eastern end of the road. There is no on-street parking allowed on the south side of Maple.

The ordinance was proposed following the downtown streetscape improvement project, which brought new sidewalks, curbing and road surfaces to portions of Maple Avenue.

Barrington Town Manager Jim Cunha said the improvements reduced the space previously used for parking.

"We recognize that any parking wasn't reasonable there," said Mr. Cunha. "If this passes, there will be no parking on either side (of Maple) for the length of the road."

The town manager said officials are still looking to create a municipal parking lot downtown. Barrington has been working to build a more "walkable" downtown area, and have encouraged people to park their cars and walk from store to store.

"There is not a whole lot available at this point," he said. "The good news is that many of our merchants have adequate parking."

The proposed ordinance will be discussed at a future council meeting.
