PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School boys’ soccer team was knocked out of the state tournament Monday night when it fell to Bishop Hendricken, 2-1, in a Division I quarterfinal game on the road.
The Hawks peppered Patriots senior goalkeeper Will Swart, who had 12 saves during the game.
Ian Crowe and Chukwudi Onyejose scored goals for Hendricken, and the Hawks held the 2-0 lead until the eight-minute mark. That’s when Patriots midfielder John Stack, standing just outside the box, blasted a kick by Hawks goalkeeper Ryan Morel to cut the lead to 2-1.
Stack ended up with the ball as it popped over a mob off a Portsmouth throw-in. Andrew Maiato was credited with the assist.
The Patriots pressed the Hawks in the second half and had several chances to tie the game down the stretch from corner kicks and throw-ins, but Morel (five saves) and the Hawks defense were able to keep the ball out of the net.
The Patriots ended their season with a 7-3-6 record.
Hendricken will play La Salle in the semifinals at East Greenwich on Wednesday night.
