PORTSMOUTH — The School Committee Tuesday night voted unanimously to establish an outdoor memorial in honor of Nathan Bruno, the 15-year-old Portsmouth High School sophomore who died by suicide in February 2018.
Superintendent Ana Riley said the memorial, made possible all through donations, will include the “planting of a cherry tree, stone bench and a stone where we will fix a permanent plaque with a quote for Nathan.”
Nathan’s friends came up with the wording for the plaque, which reads in part: “Nathan — you will continue to always brighten our days. The smiles and jokes, the catchphrases you used. The things you loved — baseball and the Red Sox, snowboarding, vineyard vines, Martha’s Vineyard and sneakers. The chance to call you our friend. The memories you have left us will leave all of us with a lifetime of happiness. Love you always — your boys, all of your friends, and family. Be great for Nate.”
The tribute was approved by a subcommittee the school board had earlier formed to review the idea. The memorial is made possible “all through donations,” Ms. Riley said.
The plaque’s design will look similar to one installed in 2017 to honor the late Ray Sullivan, a popular teacher and former football coach at PHS, the superintendent said.
“I think it will be a very fitting memorial and an inspirational place for students,” Committee Chairwoman Emily Copeland said.
Ms. Riley added that the district is also working on a similar memorial for Hannah Wertens, the popular local girl who battled leukemia nearly her entire life before dying from the effects of treatment of the disease in August 2018. She was 15.
