PORTSMOUTH — Ben Gesmondi’s three-run blast in the first inning proved to be all the offense the Portsmouth High baseball team needed in shutting out Pilgrim, 10-0, at home on Thursday, May 16.
It was the Patriots’ second Division I shutout win over Pilgrim in as many days, as Portsmouth won 1-0 on the road on Wednesday, May 15.
In that game, Portsmouth’s Andrew Preuit gave up only one hit and struck out nine.
The game’s only run came in the sixth inning, when Connor Freitas’ infield hit brought Brian Hamilton to home plate. The Patriots’ Tim McGuire notched a double and a single, and Chris Bulk also doubled.
On Thursday, starting pitcher Michael Thomas Morrissey notched six strikeouts in five innings. He gave up only two hits, both singles to Pilgrim’s Kenny Rix and Connor Fallon.
Gesmondi went two for three with four RBI. Hamilton also had a good game, going three for four with a triple, double and an RBI.
The two wins improved Portsmouth’s record to 9-7 in the division and 10-7 overall.
