‘Off the Beaten Path’ film series

Become an armchair traveler as librarian Doug Swiszcz
shows movies set in diverse locales in the air-conditioned
Salem Family Auditorium. The series begins Aug. 3 with
“Summertime” (1955, color, unrated, 100 minutes). A lonely,
middle-aged American secretary (Katharine Hepburn)
vacations in Venice where she meets a handsome Italian
antique shop owner (Rossano Brazzi). The film earned
Hepburn her sixth Academy Award nomination. Films begin
with a brief lecture by Doug. Masks are optional. The rest of
the lineup includes “Out of Africa,” starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, and “Nomadland,” starring Frances McDormand.

WHAT: Matinée film lecture series
WHEN: Wednesdays, Aug. 3 to 17, at 1 p.m.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
