Newport Art Museum winter speaker series: John Davis

“Pianist John Davis has made a mission of uncovering music by 19th century Black pianists, including enslaved persons, whose work had a direct impact on the blues, jazz, rock, and R&B artists that came in their wake…” (Time Out New York). This Thursday, Jan. 17, join John for a lecture and performance about his quest to unearth the forgotten keyboard works of the once-enslaved musician and America’s first Black superstar performer, Thomas Wiggins.

The lecture will be held in person at the Museum and virtually on Vimeo and will be followed by audience Q&A and tea reception.

Lecture recording will be available to subscribers and ticket holders.

WHEN: Jan. 17, from 2 to 4 p.m.

WHERE: Newport Art Museum, 76 Bellevue Avenue and online

PRICING: $25 per non-member ticket, $20 per member ticket

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
