Westport Elementary School sixth graders experienced a personal connection to their summer reading when author Rob Buyea paid a visit on Friday, Sept. 15.

The author of the “Mr. Terupt” book series, Mr. Buyea shared how he became a writer and offerend tips to help students become better writers themselves.

For instance, keep a writing journal at all times, and be a reader of all sorts of books.

“You never know when inspiration will hit, so have a journal and write down those times and you’ll have great pieces to add to your stories,” he said.

He explained that he takes bits and pieces of people he has met to make up his characters and even puts a little of himself into his books.

“Pay attention to the world around you, stories are everywhere,” he says.  “And if you have a story, you have something to write about.”

After speaking to approximately 150 students and staff, Mr. Buyea signed over 100 copies of his books for the students.

Before he became a full-time writer, Mr. Buyea was an elementary school teacher (third and fourth grade in Connecticut), and than a high school biology teacher at Northfield Mount Hermon School. Throughout he coached wrestling.

He is currently a resident of North Andover, Mass.

The school thanked the Westport Cultural Council, Helen E. Ellis Charitable Trust, FOWL(Friends of the Westport Library) and the WES-MAC PTO for their donations to make this opportunity a reality.
